MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart is coming under fire after he’s being accused of “disrespecting” the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s – a prominent Black sorority.
The AKAs have produced some of the most powerful Black women in history – including Maya Angelou, Ava Duverney, Toni Morrison Rosa Parks, and Kamala Harris.
On his show last Sunday, Jonathan gave his “Bye Line,” a segment where he explores the immigrant heritage of Vice President Kamala Harris, and the family bonds her mother forged that would ultimately change history
Then, he did the unthinkable. He yelled out the AKAs traditional call. Watch:
All NPHC Greek organizations have a calling. These callings are done after strolls, hymns, and chants. Every organization has a different calling and the AKA calling is “Skee-Wee”,
Almost immediately, AKAs took to social media to blast Jonathan. He’s getting dragged
I know I shouldn't have done it since I'm not an AKA. Still,
I wanted to give it a shot as my quirky way of giving respect. ✊🏾 https://t.co/rIMc9NMFAy

BREAKING🚨 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. president Dr. Glenda Glover @gloverpres comes to @TheSundayShow! Yes, we're going to talk about what I did and why it was wrong. pic.twitter.com/4stxwC1AEP

Doing our call is not a way of showing or giving respect. Show respect is by saying our name properly, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated & informing other journalists to do the same.

Agreed. Don't open the floodgates for every rando to think they can greet us, and certainly not the @VP this way. Okay, done.

And this one recently published by @NYUpress . Maybe y’all need a little library @MSNBC . pic.twitter.com/SSkJrvOSAn

I just don’t want your journalist colleagues think they can do it too since they may figure it’s ok since you did it. I’m not an AKA but I am Greek and I wasn’t feeling it and wouldn’t want anybody doing the Delta’s call.
