Former NFL running back Clinton Portis has been sentenced to six months in federal prison and six months of home confinement for his part in NFL health care benefit program fraud scheme.
In September, Portis pleaded guilty to fraud charges that he obtained nearly $100,000 after filing false claims for medical equipment that was not provided.
Prosecutors claim that 15 former players came together to collect nearly $3 million in reimbursements for medical care and medical equipment which was never actually purchased.
They say former NFL linebacker Robert McCune was the ringleader who made claims on players’ behalf in exchange for a cut of their reimbursements.
“Portis knew the claims McCune submitted on his behalf were false and fraudulent or was aware of a high probability that that the claims McCune submitted on his behalf were false and fraudulent and deliberately ignored that fact,” reads the plea agreement.
