Vogue Brazil's Style Director has resigned after photographs from a 'Slavery' party she threw surfaced on the internet.

The photos were shared on Facebook by a previous Vogue employee who wrote:

"Vogue Brazil’s Style Director Donata Meirelles had a very disgusting 50th birthday party theme last night

There appears to be a Brazilian slave + master theme. Mucamas (house slaves), who were very clearly darker complexioned, were posed as props alongside guests #DoShow50"

And the thread continues to break down the historical context and why the Vogue director's party was so offensive:

Vogue Magazine released a statement to CNN, praising Meirelles.

"With her unique sense of style, which captures the dynamism and joie de vivre of the Brazilian woman as nobody else does, Donata gave new energy to the magazine. We understand and respect her resignation and will be eternally grateful for all the passion and talent she has dedicated to every page she has edited," the statement said.

Meirelles has denied that it was a themed party, but apologized to those offended.
