Star of the upcoming season of The Bachelor, Colton Underwood has talked about the new season, which premieres Monday night.

“For a long time I was just a football player, but I want people to see me for who I am,” he told PEOPLE.

“I’m not this perfect dude. I have mistakes and I have flaws but I’m going to grow and get better from it.”

The choice to pick 26-year-old virgin Underwood was a controversial one. He's already taken part in the most recent Bachelorette season where he claimed to be in love with Becca Kufrin. He then began talking to one of Kufrin's close friends, Tia Booth. During Bachelor in Paradise, he briefly rekindled his romance with booth before eventually leaving the show. He appeared to still be heartbroken after seeing Kufrin one last time.

It was then announced that he would be the new Bachelor. Fans have accused Underwood of chasing fame and not love. Something he too takes partial blame in.

“Throughout my football career, I’ve always been somebody who’s been very aware and I know when the camera is on me and I know how to be polished,” Underwood admitted to the celebrity magazine.

“I can see how that might come off as disingenuous. So for the first time, it was like this is really me.”

The new series of The Bachelor kicks off on ABC Jan. 7.
