A 17 year old Colorado teenager plead guilty to killing the 10-year-old daughter of his mother’s boyfriend. Aiden Zellmer was charged as an adult despite being 17 years old. Earlier this month the teen plead guilty to first-degree murder for the beating death of Kiaya Campbell.
Aiden didn't get life in prison. He can be be released in as little as 30 years (he'll be 47), with good behavior.
As part of a plea deal, Aiden pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder on Feb. 1. He was 15 at the time of the murder and was initially charged as a juvenile, but the case was transferred to adult court.
10 year old Kiaya was reported missing June 7, 2017, and her body was found a day later about 1.5 miles from her home.
Aiden is believed to have gotten into a fight with Kiaya over Pokemon cards. Police say he hit her in the head 5 times with a metal pipe and dragged her into a ditch, leaving her there to die.
Kiaya's body was found naked from the waist down. there was evidence of a sexual assault, though the sex crime charges were later dismissed as part of the plea deal.
Last month, Adams County District Attorney Dave Young shared the family’s sentiment when Zellmer pleaded guilty, ABC7 Denverthis link opens in a new tab reported at the time.
“Fifteen-year-olds make bad decisions but they don’t commit cruel, heinous crimes like this,” he said. “After striking her five times in the head with a metal pipe, he left her in a field. When he talked to police, he was calm, cool and collected. He misled and deceived police who were looking for her. This is a rare case. Thank God we don’t have other 15-year-olds doing what he did.”
