Serena Williams shared an intimate moment between her and her daughter Olympia while giving her followers a history lesson on the roots of African braiding.
"Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. We have been braiding our hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe," she begins in the post's caption which features a picture of her braiding a smiling Olympia's hair.
"Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them."
"The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations, and quickly made its way across the world. I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions. @olympiaohanian"
The post has gained over 537,000 likes, and people have left heartfelt comments.
"I love hearing the history. Who would think a simple act of braiding has such a beautiful background? We all need time to connect with our children," one person wrote.
Serena had a traumatic birthing experience revealing that she almost died, but she has taken to motherhood with ease.
Through the years, Williams has worn many gorgeous braided hair looks, and it seems her daughter will be following suit.
Thank you, Serena, for this uplifting Instagram moment and for using your platform to educate people. Olympia is one lucky little lady.
