Rick Ross has revealed that an addiction to codeine led to the rapper being hospitalized in March 2018.

According to Ross, it was this life-threatening incident that made him want to pen his new memoir, Hurricanes. He also opened up to PEOPLE about the health scare.

"When I woke up in the hospital and I had so many people around me, so many homies, it felt like I was in V.I.P. or some s—," he says with a laugh. "But it was more like 'Damn, we gotta do some special things.'"

He then continues, "It was the codeine [...] That mixed with the things I was drinking, the other drugs I was doing, and on top of not resting. [I don't think] one particular thing would have killed me. But everything combined?"

Since his stint in the hospital, Ross says he is living clean:

"I cut the sodas out and I drink a lot more water. That, adding in some vegetables and I get a lot more rest."

And of course, no more codeine.
