Cyntoia Brown, the woman who became a national symbol of a broken criminal justice system was recently released from prison, is now expecting.
At the age of 16, Cyntoia was convicted of robbing and killing Johnny Allen, a 43 year old real estate agent. She spent 15 years in prison for his killing and her release from prison was celebrated worldwide.
During the case, Cyntoia told authorities that she was forced into sex work as a child and was a victim of child sex trafficking. She further claimed that Johnny Allen paid $150 to have sex with her and she feared for her life during her encounter with him. She said he reached for what she thought was a weapon and defended herself.
Prosecutors had a different take, however, and argued that Cyntoia was trying to rob the man. After her conviction for his killing and after spending several years in prison, Cyntoia's case received significant media attention, in particular social media attention and which sparked public outrage.
After much public pressure for her release, Cyntoia was granted clemency by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and was released on August 7, 2019 after being imprisoned for 15 years of a life sentence.
Upon her release though, she came home to a brand new life - and a new husband - Christian rapper J. Long.
Now the couple is expecting and announced Cyntoia's pregnancy earlier this week.
