A Pittsburgh woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 1-year-old girl. Police believe that the woman killed the baby, then buried her in a shallow grave earlier this week.
33-year-old Nyishia Corbitt has been charged with the death of 1-year-old Alinya Barnes.
Alinya's mother is currently locked up in a Montgomery County prison on retail theft charges. Alinya's father left her with Nyishia - who is believed to be Alinya's mother's best friend.
Homicide investigators say Nyishia suffocated the child. They say video surveillance from apartments across the street from where the baby's body was found show Nyishia carrying the dead little girl to the park across the street in a child carrier child. She returned without the child, according to police.
"Ms. Corbitt disclosed to her mom that the child had gone missing. She was obviously having problems —no doubt dealing with what had happened," Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit Captain Jack Ryan said.
Corbitt was charged with murder, making false reports, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse among other charges. She led police to the park in the bustling neighborhood near a high school and La Salle University's campus where the child's body was discovered early Tuesday.
A message left with an attorney for Corbitt was not immediately returned Thursday. Court documents showed a motion by her attorney to set bail was denied.
Ryan said Corbitt, who has two children ages 4 and 5 with the toddler's father and may have been his current girlfriend, had been watching the girl for several weeks. Ryan said Corbitt was living with one of her relatives, not the child's father.
