A mother and her 13 year old son were murdered on Christmas Eve, inside their Independence, Louisiana home. Police confirm that a double homicide investigation is now underway in Tangipahoa Parish, where a 42-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son were killed in what police are calling a heinous crime.

The double homicide was reported at the home of Daytra Miller and her son, Robert West Jr.

The family is hoping the community can help with the investigation.

Detectives say they believe the person who committed the “heinous crime” knew the victims.

They added additional information will be released when it becomes available as long as it doesn’t jeopardize the investigation.

Police said deputies received a 911 call Sunday at 6:30 p.m. about a shooting at the residence, where they found Miller and West dead inside their home.

"We are hopeful that someone with relevant information will step up and help put those responsible for this horrific crime behind bars," said Tangipahoa Sheriff Daniel Edwards. "One thing we do know is that there are people out there who have information about these murders. We want that information or anything that will lead us in the direction of the shooter(s)."

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-554-5245. The sheriff’s office is offering a $2,500 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest.
