A 34 year old Tampa mother is accused of forcing her 8 month old baby to smoke crack, killing the infant.
Megan Rand, according to Florida detectives, forced her Baby Brennan - who was just 8-weeks-old - to ingest the toxic, illegal substance.
Meagan was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Tampa on a felony charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office nearly six months after the April 24 death of her baby boy, Brennen.
The case has been under investigation for months. Baby Brennan died in April, but detectives did not have the results of a toxicology report until now.
The mom is now facing manslaughter charges in the death of her newborn son.
The arrest warrant details the case against the mother and what deputies say happened the day her infant died.
The mother called 911 at 2:25 p.m. and told dispatchers her newborn was unresponsive and had stopped breathing. Paramedics arrived at her parents’ Town ’N Country home and rushed the child to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Doctors pronounced Brennen dead at 3:08 p.m. His body temperature was 105.7 degrees, they noted.
Later that day, deputies said Rand allowed them to search the home, take a sample of her blood and question her about her son’s death. Rand said she was home alone with the baby. However, investigators noted that she appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
Police began investigating Meagan almost immediately, and this summer she posted a bizarre statement on Facebook:
"Spoke with investigators on Brennan's case and of the unofficial cause of death is SIDS. I love my children and would never hurt them. It feels good to be getting vindicated."
The statement is "bizarre", because police say that she was lying.
The toxicology report came back positive for cocaine in the child's system. Shortly afterwards Meagan was busted and booked.
