Police found the remains of a missing woman inside a dumpster in Winston-Salem, and they believe she was murdered.

Shantika Lashae Dunlap, 30, was reported missing last week after friends and family contacted authorities. Authorities launched a missing person investigation that lasted almost a week.

This weekend Shantika was found, unfortunately, she was not alive.

Shantika's remains were found in a dumpster on Saturday, according to press release from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office and the Winston-Salem Police Department are investigating the homicide. So far, they believe she was murdered and are interviewing suspects.

Since the time she was reported missing, detectives with both law enforcement agencies have been working to locate Dunlap, officials said.

“We are at this point treating it as a criminal investigation,” Chief Deputy Brad Stanley said Saturday night. “We’ll know more when the medical examiner’s autopsy results are completed.”

Detectives with police and the sheriffs office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Dunlap’s death.
