Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who is currently representing two of the four R. Kelly accusers, was arrested on Tuesday for charges stemming from an extortion case reportedly linked to lawyer Mark Geragos.

Avenatti rose to fame after he for represented porn star Stormy Daniels in lawsuits against President Trump.

Avenatti was arrested on charges that included trying to extort sports brand Nike for as much as $25 million as well as embezzling a client’s money to pay his own expenses.

The lawyer was charged with extortion and bank and wire fraud in separate cases in New York and California. He was arrested in New York.

He was released on a $300,000 bond a few hours later.

His alleged co-conspirator, Geragos has represented several high profile clients including Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Winona Ryder, and Jussie Smollett.

When Avenatti announced that he would be representing two of R. Kelly's accusers, the moved was criticized by many who saw him as an opportunist and accused him of hijacking the movement, which was actually the result of many hardworking Black woman and journalists who have been trying to take Kelly down for years.

We hope the accusers seek new representation.
