A 19 yr old Illinois man is being accused of beating a 4-year-old girl to death - after the child spilled juice on his Xbox.

The teen now faces life in prison, according prosecutors.

Jonathan Fair was indicted on four counts of first-degree murder by this week. His charges were upgraded from his initial charges of aggravated battery, according to the Lake County News-Sun.

If convicted on the new more severe charges, Jonathan faces a minimum of 60 years in prison. But Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Scheller said the state intends to seek life in prison for the “heinous” crime should the case go to trial.

On December 13, police responded to a report of a child with a head injury. Police said Jonathan told them he was babysitting Skylar Mendez, his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter, when she fell and hit her head.

He later admitted to shaking her “really hard” and said beat her as punishment for spilling her drink. Fair also allegedly kicked her down the hallway of the home, according to Scheller.

Police said Fair took the girl to a local hospital after she passed out from the attack, but Skylar died a few days later at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago following a failed attempt to relieve the swelling in her brain. Doctors said Mendez had brain swelling, and it did not appear to be the first time she had it. Hospital staff noted previous signs of abuse and shaking dating back several months.
