Kim Kardashian showed off her appreciation for African culture - by wearing Fulani braids to the 2018 MTV Movie And TV Awards. She looked amazing in an all white outfit - and the West African inspired hairstyle.
But while many of Kims fans praised her look, others are claiming that Kanye's wife has "culturally appropriated" the braids. Cultural appropriation is a concept dealing with the adoption of the elements of a minority culture by members of the dominant culture. It is distinguished from equal cultural exchange due to the presence of a colonial element and imbalance of power.
Generally speaking, cultural appropriation is akin to "theft" of a culture.
Here's Kim's look:
This isn't the first time Kim has been accused of wearing a "different" hair style.
According to the Daily Mail:
Kim has previously been on the receiving end of backlash for flaunting braided hair on social media, with fans and critics both decrying cultural appropriation.
In one image, the reality star called her hairstyle 'Bo Derek braids' when users were quick to point out that her hair was actually woven into Fulani braids.
Seemingly unfazed by the commentary, Kim was quick to post another image of herself in braids and chatting on the phone, with the caption, 'Hi, can I get zero f***s please, thanks.'
Kim and her sisters have sparked many controversies by sporting braids and other cultural hairstyles without giving due credit to the black women who have worn similar styles for centuries yet are chastised for their hair choices.
