Kid Cudi joined Jada Pinkett-Smith for her most recent Red Table Talk and opened up about his own struggles with mental illness.

Cudi's battles have been well publicized and he's always been relatively open about his journey.

“I have to live up to be this person, and I don't feel like that. It's like doing a comedy but you're miserable. It's like my life was like this show and I was always supposed to be on, but when the show was over I was completely miserable.” He said.

“I'm just trying to keep it together, because, Kid Cudi, everybody's hero, this person that you look up to. I didn't want to let anybody down.

But Cudi admitted that it took a while for him to realize there was a problem.

“For a long time, I was not happy when I woke up in the morning... I thought maybe it was stress. At that point, I was doing an album every year so I thought I was just overdoing it and I needed to take a break. It took me a minute to realize that there was something going wrong with me.”

He admitted that he turned to drugs to help manage with his depression and hid his habit from friends and family.
