The Dallas police officer who entered the wrong apartment and killed an innocent man, has officially been arrested - but she only faces 2 years in prison if convicted. Under Texas law - a law enforcement officer convicted of Manslaughter faces as little as 2 years in prison.
Amber Guyger, a 30yr old four-year veteran with the Dallas Police Department, claims that she tried to enter an apartment which she believed was hers. The officer claims that when she was confronted by Botham Shem Jean, the man who lived there, she fatally shot him.
That story seems EXTREMELY unlikely, as new evidence suggests that the two may have KNOWN EACH OTHER. And an image circulating online shows Botham preferred dating White women.
Botham Shem Jean was a 26yr old native of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
Amber was arrested last night in Kaufman County and booked into the Kaufman County Jail, the Texas Rangers said in a statement.
The shooting just before 10 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) took place at the South Side Flats, an upscale apartment building south of Dallas’ downtown, Guyger had just ended her shift and was still wearing her uniform.
Police said it wasn’t clear what interaction occurred between the officer and the victim, but at one point the officer fired her weapon and struck Botham. The officer then exited the apartment and called 911, firefighters arrived then transported Jean to a hospital where he died.
