One of the leading African American Congressman Elijah Cummings passed away last night, after suffering from 'longstanding health challenges.'

According to Congressman Cummings' office, he passed away at 2:45 this morning - while admitted at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to "complications concerning longstanding health challenges".

Congressman Cummings, who was the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, hadn't returned to work after having a medical procedure that he said would only keep him away for about a week.

He missed two roll call votes Thursday, the first day back following a two-week recess. He previously released a statement saying he'd be back by the time the session resumed. The 68-year-old hadn't not taken part in a roll call vote since Sept. 11.

Congressman Cummings' family have not released the specific reason for his death. And already dozens of conspiracy theories surrounding his passing - are popping up all over social media.

Elijah Cummings, born to South Carolina sharecroppers, was born on January 18, 1951. In grade school he struggled academically and was told by teachers that he did not have the talent and ability to become a lawyer.

Cummings became a lawyer and a civil rights advocate before launching a nearly four decade long career in public service - first in the Maryland House of Delegates and then in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Elijah Cummings was also a staunch opponent of the Trump administration and a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. His integrity, leadership and strength will be missed.
