A lawyer who specializes in plea negotiations has joined R. Kelly's legal team.

According to reports, attorney Jeffrey Steinback has already met several times with Kelly, who is currently behind bars in Chicago.

Steinback agreed to represent Kelly because he is "a human being deserving of an opportunity to be heard."

Kelly has remained in federal custody since Jul. 11, when he was arrested in connection with two separate federal cases both in Chicago and New York. He may have gotten off the hook back in 2009, but this time around, it appears that it will be hard for Kelly to shake off all of the charges against him.

He faces 18 charges in total in both states, who allege that Kelly has abused women and girls from 1998 to 2018.

The New York federal prosecutors claim that Kelly ran his operation like an organized crime ring:

"The purposes of the Enterprise," they wrote in the indictment, "were to promote R. Kelly's music and the R. Kelly brand and to recruit women and girls to engage in illegal sexual activity ... By promoting R. Kelly's music and the R. Kelly brand, the members of the Enterprise expected to receive financial opportunities and personal benefits, including increased power and status within the Enterprise." The group, prosecutors say, included managers, bodyguards, drivers, and personal assistants.

Kelly denies all of the charges against him.
