A crazed and out of control Alabama police officer was caught on tape brutally beating a Black business owner, MTO News has learned. The business owner says he was punched by a Decatur, AL officer and then arrested after he called the police to report that his store had been robbed and he was holding the suspect at gunpoint.
The incident occurred nearly three months ago on March 15 but police had been blocking the release of officers' video footage - because they knew it incriminated the officers.
Yesterday the victim released his own footage - and it was graphic.
The video clip, which lasts 1 minute 10 seconds, shows an officer walk in and immediately punch Kevin Penn, the 47-year-old owner of Star Spirits & Beverages, a liquor store on Sixth Avenue in Decatur in north Alabama.
Kevin suffered a broken jaw and some of his teeth were knocked out his lawyer, Carl Cole, told AL.com. Penn underwent several weeks of treatment, including having his mouth wired shut, his lawyer said.
Kevin was brutalized, handcuffed and arrested on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing governmental operations. Police accused him of obstructing their investigation of the robbery, according to court records.
According to his lawyer, Kevin called to report the robbery and was holding the robber for police.
