A 14-year-old Baltimore boy has been charged with the rape and murder of an 83-year-old woman. The boy, Tyrone Harvin, is being charged as an adult, police spokesman T.J. Smith said at a news conference.
Police say that Tyrone sexually assaulted and then killed 83-year-old Dorothy Mae Neal in her West Baltimore apartment.
According to police Tyrone beat the great-grandmother to death after raping her.
Spokesman Smith said that authorities speculated during their investigation that the killer was young, “but I don’t think any of us were thinking a 14-year-old could be capable of something like this.”
Tyrone has been charged with first degree murder and rape, in addition to various other offenses.
Smith said that police used physical evidence to link Harvin to the crime.
Online court records show Tyrone just turned 14 days ago. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 19.
